Comic artist page rates: what to pay and charge | renaissBlock

Guides · For writers and artists Comic artist page rates: what to pay and charge The renaissBlock team · Updated October 1, 2026 There's no union scale for indie comics. Rates depend on the role, the artist's experience, how complex the pages are and what rights change hands. Here are two published sets of numbers, and how to turn them into a budget. Published per-page ranges Role Indie range, per page Comicory, 2026 Entry · intermediate · professional Nick Macari, updated 2024 Penciller $100–$400 $80 · $160 · $320 Inker $50–$200 $60 · $120 · $240 Colorist $75–$250 $40 · $80 · $160 Letterer $25–$100 $5 · $10 · $20 Figures are as published by each source, in US dollars, for freelance work; they are not renaissBlock data. Macari also lists higher tiers for expert and well-known creators (for example $640 and $960 a page for pencils). The two sources disagree most on lettering, so treat any single number as a starting point for a conversation, not a rule. What moves a rate Experience and track record. Published work and reliable deadlines command more. Page complexity. Crowd scenes, detailed backgrounds and many panels take longer than talking heads. Combined roles. An artist delivering pencils and inks together is selling finished line art; agree one price for it rather than assuming both rates simply add up. Rights. Work-for-hire, where the writer owns the pages outright, is a different deal from licensing the art for one use. Revisions and deadlines. More included revision rounds or a rush schedule are worth more. Covers are usually priced separately from interior pages. Budgeting a 22-page issue Adding up Comicory's per-page ranges for pencils, inks, colors and letters ($250–$950 a page) puts the art for a 22-page issue at roughly $5,500–$20,900, before a cover or a writer. Whatever your number, budget it stage by stage rather than as one lump: Character and design work Layouts or thumbnails Pencils Inks Colors Letters Cover Each stage becomes a milestone with its own price and deadline, so money moves as work arrives, and a project that stops halfway stops cleanly. Rates on renaissBlock Creators can list a page rate on their profile, and Find creators can filter by rate, so you can see who works within your budget before you reach out. renaissBlock's own fee is 3% when a milestone pays out; the writer chooses whether they cover it, split it, or it comes from the artist's pay, and the artist sees which before accepting.
