Marvel's 1990s Bankruptcy and the Failed Imprint Strategy
During the mid-1990s, Marvel Comics attempted to stave off bankruptcy by fragmenting its shared universe into five distinct publishing imprints. This desperate strategy ultimately failed to boost sales and contradicted the interconnected nature of the Marvel brand.

Facing a bursting collectors' bubble and declining sales, Marvel reorganized its titles into separate imprints like Marvel Edge and Alterniverse to manage its struggling catalog. The initiative restricted crossovers and failed to replicate the success of the X-Men and Spider-Man lines. By 1997, the experiment was abandoned as the company returned to its traditional publishing model. This period remains a notable example of the publisher's panic during a time of severe financial instability.
