Tapas, a pioneer of US webtoons, to shut down
Kakao Entertainment has announced the closure of its North American webtoon platform, Tapas, effective March 31, 2027. This decision marks a significant shift in the company's international strategy as it moves away from managing direct platforms in the region.

Active since 2012, Tapas served as a major hub for digital comics, hosting approximately 100,000 titles and 75,000 creators. The platform had been struggling financially, leading to significant write-downs for its parent company, Kakao. Future plans for the platform's existing content and creator contracts remain to be clarified by the company. Kakao intends to focus its international efforts on its Japanese service, Piccoma, while consolidating its domestic operations.
