Kakao Entertainment to Close Tapas Platform
Kakao Entertainment is shutting down its North American webcomic platform, Tapas, by the end of 2026. This move leaves creators searching for new hosting alternatives as the market consolidates.
The closure follows Kakao's previous acquisition of Tapas and Radish for approximately $780 million in 2021. Creators were reportedly not notified of the shutdown prior to the news breaking in Korean media. With Tapas exiting the market, many independent artists are now considering platforms like Webtoon Canvas, Patreon, or self-hosting. This consolidation leaves Naver's Webtoon as the primary dominant force in the North American webcomic space.
