Melissa Chan and Badiucao explore authoritarianism in new graphic novel
Journalist Melissa Chan and artist Badiucao have released a graphic novel titled 'You Must Take Part in Revolution' that examines the dangers of authoritarianism. The work serves as a response to the 'Chinamaxxing' trend among Western youth by depicting a dystopian future where China and the U.S. are at war.
The creators aim to encourage young readers to think critically about political resistance and the realities of living under oppressive regimes. Drawing inspiration from manga, the book features diverse characters from the Chinese-speaking diaspora navigating a conflict-ridden 2035. The authors emphasize that their critique of authoritarian systems applies globally rather than focusing on a single nation. The graphic novel is currently being released in international markets following its initial U.S. debut.
