Week 38: Jessica Smirnow
Jessica Smirnow is the featured artist for week 38 of the 2026 comic calendar. She shares her creative process for her whale-themed illustration.
Inspired by her husband's interest in aquariums and her own fascination with whales, Smirnow created a piece featuring various whale species. She initially sketched the design in her sketchbook using pencil and alcohol markers before refining it digitally in Procreate. By using a soft pencil brush, she achieved a textured look for the whales and a watercolor effect for the background. Currently, she is focused on updating and reorganizing her professional portfolio.
