Jonathan Hickman Reveals Marvel's Ultimate Universe Was Not Intended to End
Jonathan Hickman recently shared that Marvel's new Ultimate Universe line was originally planned to continue indefinitely rather than conclude after two years. The decision to wrap up the series was made mid-run, forcing creators to pivot their long-term storytelling plans.

Hickman noted that Marvel shifted its strategy to focus on 24-issue evergreen collections rather than ongoing monthly series. This change was communicated to the creative team halfway through their runs, requiring them to conclude stories that were initially designed to be handed off to new writers. Despite the commercial success of titles like Ultimate Spider-Man, the publisher opted for a finite structure. Hickman expressed surprise at the decision but acknowledged the logic behind Marvel's desire to prioritize collected editions.
